Electric Wire Arc Spray
The arc spraying process sometimes also called twin wire arc spray involves the melting of two wires (the coating material) as the coating feedstock in an arc. The two wires are electrically charged with opposing polarity and are fed into the arc gun at matched, controlled speeds. When we bring the wires together at the contact point, the opposing charges on the wires create enough heat to continuously melt the tips of the wires. They are then accelerated towards the prepared work surface by means of an atomizing gas which is compressed air.
Arc spraying is a high-performance wire spraying process, but the coating material must be electrically conductive. This arc spray process carried out correctly is called a “cold process” (relative to the substrate material being coated) as the substrate temperature can be kept low during processing avoiding damage, metallurgical changes, and distortion to the substrate material. Additionally, electric arc wire spraying produces spray at higher spray rates than other thermal spray processes, creating some of the fastest coating rates of any coating method.
Anti-corrosion or engineering coatings can be applied by arc spray and changing between the two is quite simple. Arc spray systems are commonly considered to be easy to operate and also to automate. Twin wires are fed via electrically driven motor or air motor.
Metal Coat manufactures both the type of wire arc spray equipment suitable for hand-held and fully automatic/robotic applications.

Electric arc spray coatings are normally denser and stronger than their equivalent combustion spray coatings. Low running costs, high spray rates and efficiency make it a good tool for spraying large areas and high production rates.

Features of Wire Arc Spray
- Electric arc wire spraying offers excellent portability for on-site coatings.
- It covers applications for welded tube seams, piston rings, capacitors, varistors, boiler walls, and large infrastructures.
- It uses only electricity and atomized air to melt metallic alloy and pure metal wires.
- Electric arc spray coatings are normally denser and stronger than their equivalent combustion spray coatings.
- Low running costs, high spray rates, and efficiency make it a good tool for spraying large areas and high production rates.
- The main applications of the arc spray process are anti-corrosion coatings of zinc and aluminium and machine element work on large components.
About our Wire Arc Spray Equipment
Our constant wire feeding solutions provide you with constant and consistent wire feeding rates for optimum electric arc thermal spraying. Both our arc spray system – DC Drive and Air Drive, are a pull-type system, here the wire is pulled into the arc spray equipment with the help of rollers. In the DC drive gun, the roller rotates with the help of a DC motor, and in the air drive gun, an air motor is provided with ensures wire feeding. We understand that each of your operations offers a unique set of challenges. To help you achieve your challenges, we offer a complete range of Metal Coat wire arc spray systems that are engineered to maximize simplicity, durability, and repeatability regardless of your coating application. Our wire arc spray systems are designed for high performance, ensuring low operating fatigue and significantly reduced maintenance costs.
